{"id":6993,"date":"2024-02-05T21:48:34","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T21:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freshgigz.com\/realpublisher\/how-the-anti-vaccine-movement-is-downplaying-the-danger-of-measles\/"},"modified":"2024-02-05T21:48:34","modified_gmt":"2024-02-05T21:48:34","slug":"how-the-anti-vaccine-movement-is-downplaying-the-danger-of-measles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/freshgigz.com\/realpublisher\/how-the-anti-vaccine-movement-is-downplaying-the-danger-of-measles\/","title":{"rendered":"How the anti-vaccine movement is downplaying the danger of measles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit_1500w\/rockcms\/2024-02\/240202-measles-vaccine-misinformation-anti-vaxx-cs-b45eb5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">As outbreaks of measles spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/globalhealth\/measles\/data\/global-measles-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\">throughout the world<\/a>, anti-vaccine activists aren\u2019t just urging people not to get vaccinated \u2014 they\u2019re taking a page from a well-worn playbook, falsely downplaying the dangers from the highly contagious respiratory disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe truth is, measles is not a super severe serious illness when you\u2019re a child,\u201d Mary Holland, president of the country\u2019s best-funded anti-vaccine organization, Children\u2019s Health Defense, <a href=\"https:\/\/live.childrenshealthdefense.org\/chd-tv\/shows\/good-morning-chd\/measles-mania-this-week-with-mary-polly\/\" target=\"_blank\">said last week<\/a> on the group\u2019s online morning show. Children\u2019s Health Defense was founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who took a leave from the organization in April to run for president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Holland, a lawyer, called government responses to recent outbreaks \u201cfearmongering\u201d and \u201ccrying wolf.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s a couple days of spots and then you move on,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But national health agencies warn the fear of measles is well-founded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Measles \u2014 a disease so contagious it acts as a bellwether for threats from other infectious diseases \u2014 is marked by fever, flu-like symptoms and an itchy rash, and sometimes comes with dire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/symptoms\/complications.html#:~:text=Severe%20complications%20in%20children%20and,unvaccinated%20people%20in%20the%20U.S.\" target=\"_blank\">complications<\/a> including pneumonia, seizures and brain damage. For every 1,000 cases of\u00a0 measles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/symptoms\/complications.html\" target=\"_blank\">about<\/a> 200 children may be hospitalized, 50 may get pneumonia, one child may develop brain swelling along with deafness or disability, and between one and three may die.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Despite the availability of an incredibly effective vaccine, the disease is spreading worldwide. The reasons behind the surge are complex. For countries in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, there are issues of access; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7246a3.htm?s_cid=mm7246a3_w\" target=\"_blank\">childhood vaccine campaigns suffered<\/a> when Covid weakened already-stretched public health systems. Europe, the U.K. and the U.S. experienced similar, if smaller-scale, disruptions to their childhood vaccine programs during Covid. Rising vaccine skepticism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/measles-outbreak-uk-europe-rcna135737\" target=\"_blank\">plays a smaller<\/a> but significant part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Last month, the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-00265-8#:~:text=There%20was%20a%2045%2Dfold,fewer%20than%201%2C000%20in%202022.\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> an \u201calarming\u201d 45-fold increase in measles in Europe from 2022 to 2023, while health officials in the U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/measles-outbreak-could-spread-warns-ukhsa-chief-executive\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a> a \u201cnational incident\u201d stemming from an outbreak of hundreds of cases in the West Midlands, warning of a likely spread to other regions. U.K. officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-68028530\" target=\"_blank\">attribute<\/a> the rise to a drop in vaccine uptake.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Across the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/health-news\/georgia-health-officials-report-second-measles-case-in-state\/MQB466NQVVHEVEQQW26I2RTT2U\/\" target=\"_blank\">state<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2024-01-23-health-department-update-on-measles-outbreak-january-22\/\" target=\"_blank\">regional<\/a> health agencies have been announcing cases of measles in their communities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/newsletters\/coca\/2024\/012524.html\" target=\"_blank\">advisory<\/a> last week for providers to \u201cstay alert\u201d for measles cases, citing 23 confirmed cases since Dec. 1, mostly among unvaccinated children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Anti-vaccine activists and influencers are unfazed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mother and wellness influencers with tens of thousands of followers on Instagram have reacted to the recent outbreaks with posts warning their audience not to buy into the hype. \u201cAs the news tries to fear-monger about the measles \u2018outbreak,\u2019\u201d one home birth advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/5RN5-BJR8\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a>, \u201cremember that the vaccine is more dangerous than the actual illness.\u201d (This is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/autism.html\" target=\"_blank\">false<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Other mom influencers posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C2SuLLROHPS\/\" target=\"_blank\">memes<\/a> tapping into nostalgia for a time when some parents intentionally exposed their young children to measles, mumps and rubella with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/image\/624819374\/?terms=measles%20parties&amp;match=1\" target=\"_blank\">parties<\/a>,\u201d as the diseases were considered serious, but less harmful for young children. These planned contaminations largely ended with the availability of vaccines, which offered the preferable opportunity to avoid the diseases in childhood and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Before a measles vaccine became available in 1963, the U.S. saw an estimated millions of cases per year,\u00a0 tens of thousands of related hospitalizations, and hundreds of deaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\">according to the CDC<\/a>. At the time, compared to polio and smallpox, measles was considered a milder disease, but riding a wave of success from those immunization efforts, the federal government launched a vaccine push to eradicate measles and by 1969, cases had fallen dramatically.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While pockets of distrust for vaccines have existed as long as vaccines themselves, certain events \u2014 most notably the publication of since-discredited research by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/02\/us\/a-discredited-vaccine-studys-continuing-impact-on-public-health.html\" target=\"_blank\">disgraced doctor Andrew Wakefield<\/a> \u2014 supercharged the anti-vaccine movement and have powered the enduring and false belief that vaccines lead to autism and other maladies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The tactic of minimizing the threat of vaccine-preventable illnesses is nothing new. Anti-vaccine activists in the 1800s <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/covid-19-anti-vaxxers-use-the-same-arguments-from-135-years-ago-145592\" target=\"_blank\">dismissed the dangers<\/a> of smallpox as \u201csenseless panic\u201d ginned up by doctors and health officials. And during Covid \u2014 a disease that claimed over 1 million American lives \u2014 activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/news-politics\/texas-anti-vaxxers-fear-mandatory-coronavirus-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\">claimed<\/a> through debunked documentaries and conspiracy-theory-laden books that the vaccines were more dangerous than the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In 2019, as measles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html#:~:text=Measles%20cases%20in%202019,were%20not%20vaccinated%20against%20measles.\" target=\"_blank\">surged<\/a> through the U.S. at a rate not seen in decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/26\/politics\/donald-trump-measles-vaccines\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">then-President Donald Trump<\/a> reversed his previously hesitant stance to urge parents to get their children vaccinated. In response, weeks later, the second best-funded anti-vaccine organization, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/struggling-anti-vaccination-groups-enjoyed-pandemic-windfall-rcna14402\" target=\"_blank\">Informed Consent Action Network<\/a>, released \u201cMeasles for Dumbies,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.thehighwire.com\/ark-videos\/episode-109-measles-for-dumbies\/\" target=\"_blank\">a video guide<\/a> for how to \u201cidentify, understand and refute mainstream misinformation,\u201d about what Del Bigtree, the group\u2019s executive director and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/rfk-jr-hires-del-bigtree-anti-vaccine-activist-communications-director-rcna131859\" target=\"_blank\">now director of communications<\/a> for the Kennedy campaign, called \u201ca benign childhood disease.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">By December 2019, a measles outbreak in Samoa \u2014 where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2019\/11\/26\/deadly-measles-outbreak-hits-children-samoa-after-anti-vaccine-fears\/\" target=\"_blank\">anti-vaccine activists<\/a> including Kennedy had advocated against measles-mumps-rubella vaccines \u2014 had killed dozens of children and babies, underscoring the consequences of low vaccination rates. Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/rfk-jr-anti-vaccine-push-white-house-rcna89470\" target=\"_blank\">told NBC News<\/a> last year that he discounts the official cause of those deaths, believing despite evidence to the contrary that the vaccine, not measles, was to blame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kennedy has made light of measles for years. In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/rfk-jr-amish-community-vaccine-safety-technology\/?fbclid=IwAR07qeHogs59DEQWCmNWF0uytkXQPHcGhUJ30laJx8CAHkw0KM9r2bcshow\" target=\"_blank\">at an Amish country fair in Lancaster, Pennsylvania<\/a>, he praised low vaccine rates and warned the audience that the government was \u201ccoming for the Amish.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI am a measles survivor,\u201d Kennedy said sarcastically as the crowd roared with laughter. \u201cIt was extraordinary. I\u2019m very, very lucky to have lived through that nightmare because we had to stay at home and watch TV the whole week with all of my brothers and sisters. It was horrible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhat is the cure for measles?\u201d he continued. \u201cChicken soup and Vitamin A. Neither of those things can be patented.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kennedy went on to suggest that pharmaceutical companies were ignoring harms from the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine \u2014 a claim without evidence \u2014 to make \u201cpermanent customers\u201d of injured children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Asked for a comment, Stefanie Spear, the Kennedy campaign\u2019s press secretary, said in an email: \u201cThe reason Mr. Kennedy was making light of measles infection is because his generation considered it a routine childhood illness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Spear added that measles deaths were relatively rare before the vaccine was invented. \u201cVirtually every one of our grandparents who were alive before 1960 caught the measles and survived it,\u201d she said. \u201cWe would not be having this conversation if our grandparents had died from measles.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Nostalgic stories like Kennedy\u2019s remain one of the anti-vaccine movement\u2019s go-to modern talking points, illustrated most often by a piece of pop culture posing as evidence \u2014 a 50-year-old episode of \u201cThe Brady Bunch.\u201d The clip, in which the Brady children contract and recover from measles with little fanfare or seeming concern from their sitcom parents, went so viral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/dateline\/video\/-brady-bunch-star-hits-back-after-episode-fuels-critics-of-measles-vaccine-1514091075784\" target=\"_blank\">in 2019<\/a> that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2019\/04\/28\/717595757\/brady-bunch-episode-fuels-campaigns-against-vaccines-and-marcia-s-miffed\" target=\"_blank\">former star<\/a> from the show spoke out against it. The clip is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/01\/25\/how-the-brady-bunch-facilitates-misplaced-nostalgia-about-measles-on-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\">going <\/a>around <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/ARY8-LEN3\" target=\"_blank\">again<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/369475558948108\" target=\"_blank\">anti-vaccine circles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s a campaign fueled by selective memory, and one with senseless consequences, said Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia and a frequent target of the anti-vaccine movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cMost everybody who was born before a vaccine was available had measles. I had measles as did all my friends. I lived, but not everybody did,\u201d Offit said. \u201cIt is galling that people think if they don\u2019t see somebody die right next to them then it never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Offit mentioned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/news\/2021\/03\/20\/philadelphia-measles-outbreak-1991\/\" target=\"_blank\">1991 measles outbreak<\/a> in Philadelphia that started in a church community. By the time health officials had it contained, 1,400 people, mostly unvaccinated preschoolers, had been infected. Nine children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2015\/02\/19\/386040745\/why-a-court-once-ordered-kids-vaccinated-against-their-parents-will\/\" target=\"_blank\">died<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Measles means \u201csuffering, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and the occasional death,\u201d Offit said. \u201cKids with measles are sick.
